Our Story

H & S Mechanical Inc. is a family-owned and operated business established in 2008 by two union families, the Howards, and the Sornbergers. Tara (Slater) Howard grew up around the trades as the daughter of a local pipefitter. These same circles are how she came to meet Shaun Howard.  Shaun was a local #353 pipefitter working for various contractors in the area at the time. They both understood the fluctuation of work that went along with the trades and how it affected the security of their family. Ultimately, their goal was to seek opportunities for improvement in the industry by offering exceptional quality and customer service at competitive pricing. This vision was shared by Dan and Tarrah Sornberger, another #353 union family, and so together, H & S Mechanical Inc. was formed.  Starting a business in 2008 during the economic recession was challenging, but with grit and determination, the company persevered and grew in the years to come.

Originally focused on industrial/commercial mechanical piping & valve repair, in 2013, Justin Sprout joined the team to expand services to include structural steel fabrication & erection. Justin had similar experiences working as an ironworker in the trades for various contractors. His trade background, work ethic, and dedication to customer satisfaction aligned with the values of H & S Mechanical, and the Iron Work & Structural Steel Division was born.

In 2014, H & S opened its fabrication shop in Bartonville, IL. In 2015, the Sornbergers stepped out of the ownership role of the business. Shaun and Tara continued to manage the business as President and Vice-President. In 2017, the company expanded to include electrical and millwright services, and our team members also grew in number.

Tara took over as President, allowing Shaun to focus more on growing the production leadership within the company. In March 2020, the business administrative operations moved down the street, allowing our fabrication shop space expansion to increase production capabilities.

In 2019, H & S Mechanical Inc. gained federal certification by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council as a certified Women Business Enterprise and certified Woman-Owned Small Business. In 2020, state certification followed as the company became a certified vendor by the State of Illinois Business Enterprise Program as a Women’s Business Enterprise.

Today, we are one of the largest signatory contractors in central Illinois and are signatory to four trades and multiple unions throughout the state of Illinois. We serve clients in various markets, including industrial, healthcare, education, commercial, and government. H & S Mechanical Inc. is a company built by the doers, and this guides our company in every way. We are very grateful for all those people and relationships that helped foster the success of H & S Mechanical because of what we stand for. Success for H & S Mechanical is a success for all.
